The Tech Report -- TWO MONTHS AGO, ATI demoed a Radeon X850 XT graphics card with 512MB of graphics memory. It was a technology preview rather than an actual product launch, but that didn't stop NVIDIA from following up with a 512MB version of the GeForce 6800 Ultra. In fact, a number of manufacturers have already signed on to produce the GeForce 6800 Ultra 512MB, but at around $900 a pop, the card treads in Extreme Edition territory, beyond the budgets of most gamers and enthusiasts. What if you could get a 512MB graphics card for half that price? Today ATI is announcing a 512MB flavor of its Radeon X800 XL. The card packs dual DVI outputs, video in and out capabilities, and twice the memory of the standard X800 XL for only $450. But does the extra graphics memory actually improve performance?

 

Phoronix -- A new month, a new set of display drivers. Coming out of the AMD camp today is Catalyst 7.1 and fglrx 8.33.6. There are a few noteworthy changes in this ATI Linux driver release, which is what we have detailed in this article along with our usual set of graphics benchmarks. This Linux driver is also the first that provides preliminary support for the Radeon X2000 R600 series for both notebook and desktop components.

3D Game Man -- The ATI TV Wonder Elite is based on the very powerful ATI Theater 550 Pro chip. The large analog tuner of previous generation TV Wonder products is replaced by the small Microtune MT2050 Digital Tuner. This tuner not only is capable of TV but also FM radio. For convenience, the Remote Wonder Plus remote control is included. The only downside to this product is the weak software package, Power Cinema.

The Tech Report -- Some four months after first announcing its CrossFire technology, ATI is finally ready to bring multi-GPU Radeon rendering to the masses. Enthusiasts have been anxiously awaiting CrossFire arrival, in part because the particulars of the Radeon X800 series have forced ATI to take a somewhat novel approach to GPU teaming, employing "master" cards and an external composting engine to weave the output of two graphics cards together for a single display. We've also been eager to see how CrossFire will stack up against NVIDIA's SLI technology, which the green team has diligently refined for nearly a year. CrossFire is more than just a GPU teaming technology, though. ATI has also developed CrossFire Edition chipsets and motherboards to go along with its new graphics cards.
